Oregon Battle of the Books

Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is a statewide reading competition that happens in February each year for students in grades 3rd through 5th. Students read from a selected list of books (see below for 2023-2024 reading list) and participate in “battles” where teams take turns answering questions about the books. Each school hosts a local OBOB tournament, the winner of which moves on to the Regional Tournament and competes against the winning teams from other schools.

OBOB teams consist of 4 students and an adult coach. The coach acts as a team coordinator by communicating with the team's parents, facilitating practices and preparing the team in whatever way they choose. OBOB organizers will assist coaches by sending emails with suggestions and resources and by coordinating mock battles at the school.

Registration for the 2023-2024 school year has begun.

The window for 2024 regional tournaments is March 2 – March 23, 2024. The OBOB state tournament is scheduled for Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Chemeketa Community College in Salem.

More information about the Cedar Mill battles will be shared as soon as it is available.

FAQs

When will Cedar Mill’s Tournament take place?

Cedar Mill’s OBOB battles will take place in person after school, tentatively scheduled during the weeks of February 5, 2024 and February 12, 2024. The specific days for the battles are TBD based on the number of teams signed up as well as building, staff and moderator availability. Cedar Mill’s school champion must be selected by February 17, 2024 to ensure they will be able to participate in the Regional OBOB Tournament.

How are students grouped into teams?

Teams are most often formed by the students themselves who choose to be on a team together. The only requirement is for all team members to be in the same grade (since mock battles will be held during lunch recess.)

When looking to form an OBOB team, it is helpful for students to consider their own goals and expectations with respect to reading, preparation and competitiveness and try to find teammates with similar expectations. This will help minimize conflicts amongst the team members. Regardless of a team’s competitiveness, all OBOB participants and coaches are expected to demonstrate good sportsmanship.

If your student is having difficulty finding a team, we recommend asking their teacher to see if they know of anyone else looking for a team member. Your student may also submit a registration form and indicate on the form that they are looking for a team. OBOB coordinators will then attempt to help those students form teams, although there is no guarantee that students will be placed on a team in this manner.

How many students can be on a team?

We recommend teams of 4 students as only 4 students can battle at once. The maximum team size is 5, with 1 person acting as an alternate during the battles. The minimum number of students for a team is 2, although we strongly encourage teams of 2 to consider recruiting additional team members or combining with other teams of 2. No more than 4 students and no less than 2 students may participate in a battle.

How many books does my child have to read?

Typically, each team of 4 students will divide up the list amongst the team members so that each student reads between 4-8 books. This year, there are 16 books in the 3rd-5th grade division. The list can be found below and an annotate version is on the OBOB website: OBOB Book List 2023-2024

Where can I find the OBOB books?

There are several ways to find OBOB books. Thanks to the funds from the Cedar Mill PTC, the school library now owns 4 copies of each book that students can check out. The Washington County Cooperative Library System, which includes the Cedar Mill Community Library, has hard copies, kindle e-readers and e-books accessed via Libby that members can borrow. Books can also be purchased from local bookstores.

What if I have more questions?
